On Being Resourced

This morning, I woke up before my alarm, and sat out on my balcony enjoying my coffee.

I woke up my daughter, who kept trying to push snooze, and when she started doing the teenage whining cranky thing, I simply asked how I could support her and then tempted her out of bed with a hot chocolate.

I went downstairs, made her a salad for lunch, chatted with my current live-in friend in the kitchen, and then when the grumpy teenager came down, I sat her down with breakfast and hot chocolate while I finished the rest of getting her stuff together.

“Did someone die?” she asked, with real concern. “What is happening? Why are you being so nice???”

“Well, babe,” I answered, “this is what a well-resourced mother looks like.”

Then I loved her right out of the door, my friend driving her to school so that I could come up here and quickly type out this letter to all of you before my appointments start.

I am a different person these days.

Yesterday I was dancing in the kitchen.

When my daughter mentioned that she was out of shampoo, I offered to take us to Whole Foods to get her favorite kind, and then spent 20 minutes goofing around in the aisles trying on hats and smelling candles.

There’s been more space and time.
More dinners at the dining room table.
More conversations with loved ones.
More deep belly laughter.
More midday walks in the sunshine.

Today, I feel more calm than I have felt outside of a vacation in longer than I can remember.

I tend to think the two are correlated.

I am incredibly lucky that right now in my life I am deeply resourced, with money and time and support and love and work that aligns with my greatest purpose.

But that was true a couple of months ago, and mornings still looked very different - full of stress and frustration and rushing and anger.

So what’s changed?

Me.

The editing of my business was more about this change than any other factor.

It was time to learn how to truly slow down, and to let the resourcing IN.

Because in the same way that putting all the nutrients we can put into our bodies won’t help if we don’t prepare our bodies to absorb them, having all the resources in the world doesn’t change a thing if we’re not doing the work to learn to let them all in, and let our nervous systems truly relax.

I always trust my timing, so I trust that this is all happening at the right time for me… but I also will say that in this moment I wish I had known a year ago, or two years ago, what I know deeply here, in this moment, so I’ll pass it onto you with the hope that it’s exactly what one of you needs to hear:

Prepare to be resourced.

Don’t wait until every single thing is going right and everything is working.

Right now, there are so many ways you can start to resource yourself and let in all the good.

Put music on.

Dance in the kitchen.
Take a walk in the sunshine.
Sit down and breathe deeply.
Light a candle.
Laugh with a friend.
Let it all soak in as deeply as you can.

It will speed up the process of bringing in any and all resources that you’re needing or wanting, and help you practice the muscle of fully receiving them when they arrive.
